The Dreamer's Dilemma
Lena discovered her gift—or curse—on her 25th birthday. Whatever she dreamed came true, materializing in the waking world with alarming precision. At first, it was exhilarating. She dreamed of a promotion at work, and the next day her boss called her into his office with good news. She imagined reuniting with her long-lost childhood friend, and a week later, they bumped into each other at a coffee shop.
Realizing the potential of her newfound ability, Lena delved into the art of lucid dreaming. She spent hours researching techniques, practicing reality checks, and keeping detailed dream journals. Within months, she could control her dreams at will, shaping reality to her liking.
But word spread quickly.
It started with family and close friends. A cousin asking for help with medical bills. A friend begging for a dream about landing their dream job. Lena obliged, feeling a sense of duty to use her gift for good.
Then came the neighbors, coworkers, and distant acquaintances. Their requests grew more demanding, more desperate. "Please, just one small dream," they'd plead. "It would change my life."
Soon, strangers began showing up at her doorstep. They camped out on her lawn, held vigils outside her workplace. The local news ran a story about the "Miracle Dreamer," and Lena's life spiraled out of control.
Everywhere she went, she was accosted by people with outstretched hands and tear-filled eyes. "Please, dream for me," they'd beg. "Just once. I'll never ask for anything again."
Lena barely slept anymore, afraid of the consequences her dreams might have. When she did sleep, it was fitful and guarded. The pressure to fulfill everyone's wishes was crushing her.
One night, overwhelmed and exhausted, Lena made a decision. She focused all her energy on one final lucid dream: a world where her ability never existed, where dreams were just dreams.
She woke up the next morning to blissful silence. No crowds outside, no desperate pleas. Just the soft chirping of birds and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Lena smiled, finally at peace, wondering if it had all been just a dream.
